Cyprus, sea and mountains in one island

Cyprus is the easternmost island in the Mediterranean, and it stays warm long after Greece and Italy have cooled. That makes it a good choice for late autumn and spring sun within a short flight, with the sea often warm enough to swim into November.

The island has more to it than beaches. Paphos has Roman floor mosaics and rock-cut tombs, both UNESCO-listed. The Troodos Mountains have painted Byzantine churches in wooded villages, cool air in summer and good walking. Limassol has a restored old town and marina, with the ancient theatre of Kourion on the cliffs nearby.

The honest caveat is high summer. July and August are very hot, especially inland, and the resort towns are busy. English is widely spoken and driving is on the left, which makes Cyprus an easy island to explore.

Things worth doing in Cyprus

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • Roman floor mosaic of an eagle with outstretched wings inside a patterned border, House of Dionysos, Paphos

    Mosaics and tombs in Paphos

The Paphos Archaeological Park has Roman floor mosaics in the villas of Dionysos and Theseus, with scenes from myth still vivid underfoot. Nearby, the Tombs of the Kings are underground chambers cut into rock by the sea. Visit early with a guide, before the heat, and finish at the harbour fort.

Best March to May, October and November

  • The stone walls and steep pitched roof of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis church near Kakopetria in the Troodos Mountains

    Painted churches in the Troodos

High in the Troodos Mountains, small Byzantine churches with steep wooden roofs hide walls covered in frescoes, and ten of them are UNESCO-listed. Visit Asinou and Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, walk the forest trails around Mount Olympus, and stay in a village such as Kakopetria or Omodos. It is cool when the coast is hot.

Best April to June, September and October

  • Boats anchored in the clear turquoise shallows of the Blue Lagoon off the rocky Akamas peninsula, Cyprus

    The Akamas peninsula by boat

The northwest tip of Cyprus is protected, with no resorts and few roads. A private boat from Latchi reaches the Blue Lagoon for swimming in clear water, and there are coastal walks to the Baths of Aphrodite. Turtles nest on the beaches at Lara Bay in summer; follow the rules there and keep to marked areas.

Best May, June, September and October

  • Stone tiers of the Roman theatre at Kourion looking out over the coast and sea near Limassol

    Kourion and Limassol

Kourion is a Greco-Roman city on a clifftop above the sea, with a restored theatre that still hosts summer performances. Limassol, close by, has an old town around its medieval castle and a modern marina. Spend an evening in the old town tavernas and a day tasting in the wine villages above the city.

Best April to June, September and October

  • Rows of vines on green rolling hillsides at the Zenon Winery vineyards in the Limassol district of Cyprus

    Meze and mountain wine

A proper Cypriot meze is a slow procession of small dishes: halloumi, grilled sheftalia sausages, snails, octopus and finally kleftiko, lamb baked in a sealed clay oven. The wine villages of the Krasochoria above Limassol make Commandaria, a sweet dessert wine with a very long history. Book village tavernas for Sunday lunch, when families gather.

Best March to May and September to November

  • Clear blue water off the rocky shore at Fig Tree Bay, Protaras, looking out along the Cyprus coast

    Late-season beaches

Cyprus is where you go when the Mediterranean elsewhere is too cool. The coves around Protaras and the long beaches near Paphos and Limassol are still warm into November, and quieter once the summer holidays end. Choose a hotel with its own stretch of beach and a heated pool for the evenings.

Best May, June and September to November

Where to stay in Cyprus

Paphos and the west suit those who want history and quieter coast, with the Akamas close by. Limassol has smart city hotels and the wine villages. Protaras has calmer, family-friendly beaches. A few nights in a Troodos village adds a different side to the island.

Money

The Republic of Cyprus uses the euro. Cards are accepted widely in hotels and restaurants; keep some cash for village cafés and markets.

Phones and internet

Surcharge-free roaming in the EU is no longer guaranteed for UK customers, so check your provider's charges before you go, and set a spending limit. Hotel Wi-Fi is standard.

Tipping

A service charge is included in Cypriot restaurant bills, so tipping is optional. That charge does not always reach the staff, so a little cash left for a good waiter is appreciated.

Cyprus questions

Is Cyprus warm in November?

Usually, yes. It is warmer than most of Europe in November, with sunny days and a sea that is often still swimmable early in the month. Evenings are cooler and rain becomes more likely later on, so it suits a relaxed week of beach, walking and food.

Is Paphos or Limassol the better base?

Paphos for history, the Akamas and a quieter coast. Limassol for a livelier city, smarter restaurants and the wine villages. For a week, splitting between the two, with a night or two in the Troodos, gives you both sides of the island without long drives.

Is Cyprus good for families?

Yes, and an easy one. English is widely spoken, driving is on the left, the beaches are sandy and safe in many places, and the food is child-friendly. Avoid the peak heat of July and August with young children.

Can we visit the north of Cyprus?

Crossing points connect the Republic of Cyprus with the north, and many visitors cross in Nicosia on foot. Rules on insurance, car hire and documents differ, so read the FCDO travel advice for Cyprus before you plan it and tell us early so we can arrange it properly.
