Why Ras Al Khaimah is the Emirate we choose for active, unhurried weeks

Ras Al Khaimah is the northernmost of the seven Emirates, squeezed between the Gulf and the Hajar Mountains. It has what Dubai lacks: real mountains, with Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak, rising straight behind the coast. The beach hotels on Al Marjan Island are calmer and better value than their Dubai equivalents.

It suits people who want to do things. Mornings on mountain trails or a zipline, afternoons by the sea, and a sense of the older Gulf in the pearling village of Jazirat Al Hamra and the fort at Dhayah. Dubai is close enough for a day of restaurants and souks.

The trade-off is polish. The dining scene is small, the sights are low-key, and in summer the coast is as hot as anywhere in the Gulf. Come between October and April.

Things worth doing in Ras Al Khaimah

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • The Jebel Jais road winding through the rocky ridges of the Hajar Mountains in Ras Al Khaimah

Sunrise and trails on Jebel Jais

A smooth mountain road climbs Jebel Jais in long switchbacks, with viewing decks over folded limestone ridges. At the top it can be up to 10°C cooler than the coast, which makes winter walks pleasant and even summer mornings bearable. Marked hiking trails lead off the road. Go at dawn for clear views before the haze.

    Best November to March

  • Deep rocky valleys and folded ridges seen from high on Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah

Zipline and via ferrata on the mountain

Jebel Jais has a long, fast zipline that flies you face-down over the valley, and a guided via ferrata with fixed cables, ladders and a rope bridge along the cliffs. Both have weight, height and age limits, so check before you go. Book the first slot of the day to avoid the midday heat.

    Best October to April

  • Weathered coral-stone walls of an abandoned house in the ghost village of Jazirat Al Hamra

Walking the lanes of Jazirat Al Hamra

Jazirat Al Hamra was a pearling and fishing town until its families left for newer housing, leaving coral-stone houses, a mosque and a fort standing empty by the shore. Go in the late afternoon light and take a guide for the stories.

    Best November to March

  • Rows of pearl-farm buoys on the calm lagoon at Al Rams, Ras Al Khaimah, with the Hajar Mountains beyond

Out to the pearl farm at Al Rams

Pearling was the Gulf's living before oil. At Suwaidi Pearls, a family-run farm off the fishing village of Al Rams, you head out by boat through the mangroves to a floating platform, learn how cultured pearls are grown and open an oyster yourself. It takes a morning and works well with children.

    Best October to April

  • The mud-brick walls of Dhayah Fort on its rocky hilltop, with the Hajar Mountains behind

    The hilltop fort at Dhayah

Dhayah Fort sits on a steep hill above date palms near the northern end of the emirate. A short climb of steps leads to the mud-brick towers and a view across the plantations to the sea and mountains. Go early or late in the day.

    Best November to March

  • Turquoise sea beyond a palm-lined shore on Al Marjan Island, Ras Al Khaimah

    Beach days and mangrove kayaking

Al Marjan Island is a set of man-made islands with long beaches and calm, shallow water. Closer to the old town, the lagoons are lined with mangroves that you can explore by kayak or paddleboard with a guide. Go on a high tide in the morning, when herons and crabs are out.

Where to stay in Ras Al Khaimah

Most people stay on the coast. Al Marjan Island has the newer beach resorts and the calmest water, while the older hotels along the main beach are closer to town. A night or two in a desert resort south of the city, or up on Jebel Jais, gives a different view.

We match each trip in Ras Al Khaimah to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

Ras Al Khaimah has the Gulf's long summer and short winter, with one difference: the mountains. The summit of Jebel Jais runs up to 10°C cooler than the coast, and winter nights up there can be genuinely cold, so pack a warm layer.

The season runs from October to April, with November to March the sweet spot. In 2027 Ramadan falls across February and March, when days are quieter and evenings livelier.

Ras Al Khaimah questions

How does Ras Al Khaimah compare with Dubai?

It is quieter, greener in places and more outdoorsy, with real mountains behind the beaches. Hotels are generally better value. What you give up is choice: fewer restaurants, less shopping and nightlife, and fewer headline sights. Many people pair the two.

Is Ras Al Khaimah good for families?

Very. The beaches on Al Marjan Island are calm and shallow, the resorts have children's clubs, and the pearl farm and Dhayah Fort make easy half-day outings. Older children and teenagers get the zipline and via ferrata on Jebel Jais, subject to age and height limits.

Can we visit Oman's Musandam peninsula from Ras Al Khaimah?

Yes. Musandam lies just to the north, and day trips by road to its fjord-like inlets for a dhow cruise are popular. It means crossing into Oman, so check the [FCDO advice for Oman](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/oman) and take your passport. For a longer stay, see our [Oman page](/destinations/middle-east/oman).

Does it get cold on Jebel Jais?

In winter, yes. The summit can be up to 10°C cooler than the coast, and it gets chilly after dark. Pack a fleece or light jacket if you plan to stay the night or go up for sunrise.
