Prince Maurice sits on a private stretch of the north-east coast where a fish reserve and mangrove channel wrap around the resort. The Junior Suites and Villas on stilts stand over that water, so you wake to water and birdsong rather than a pool deck. It is one of the quietest big resorts on the island, and it feels it.
Food is the other reason to come. Le Barachois floats on pontoons in the mangroves and serves seafood by lantern light, and the cellar holds more than 25,000 bottles. Golfers can play the Legend and Links championship courses, both 18 holes.
It suits couples and families who want peace more than buzz. If you want a lively bar scene or to walk out of the gate to restaurants and shops, stay in Grand Baie instead. The transfer is also on the longer side, about an hour and a quarter by car.
