Day by day

Open any day for the detail. Everything here can move: add a night, swap a hotel, change the order.

  1. Days 1 to 2 · Miraflores, LimaLima

Land in Lima and rest in Miraflores, on the cliffs above the Pacific. The next day, walk the colonial centre with a guide and spend the evening on what Lima does best: ceviche at lunch and a long tasting menu at dinner.

Overnight: A small hotel in Miraflores

  2. Days 3 to 5 · Moray, Sacred ValleyThe Sacred Valley

Fly to Cusco and drive straight down into the valley, which is lower and easier on the body. Visit the Pisac market and ruins, the salt pans at Maras and the circular terraces at Moray, and the Inca town of Ollantaytambo.

Overnight: A hacienda-style hotel in the Sacred Valley

  3. Day 6 · Machu PicchuMachu Picchu

Take the train from Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba gorge to Aguas Calientes. Your guide takes you round the citadel in the afternoon, when the day visitors have started to leave.

Overnight: A lodge by the river in Aguas Calientes

  4. Day 7 · CuscoMachu Picchu at dawn, then Cusco

Go back up on one of the first buses for the citadel in the morning light, then take the train and road back to Cusco. The city is higher, so take the afternoon slowly.

Overnight: A converted colonial house in central Cusco

  5. Days 8 to 9 · Sacsayhuamán, CuscoCusco

Walk the city with a guide: the Qorikancha, where Spanish churches sit on Inca walls, the San Pedro market, the hillside quarter of San Blas, and the massive stone terraces of Sacsayhuamán above the town.

Overnight: A converted colonial house in central Cusco

  6. Day 10 · Cusco airportFly home

Fly from Cusco to Lima to connect with the overnight flight home to London Heathrow.
