Day by day

Open any day for the detail. Everything here can move: add a night, swap a hotel, change the order.

  1. Day 1 · ArushaArrive at Kilimanjaro

Land at Kilimanjaro airport and drive to a coffee farm lodge on the outskirts of Arusha. An early night, because the children will be up before dawn tomorrow anyway.

Overnight: A coffee farm lodge outside Arusha

  2. Days 2 to 4 · Tarangire National ParkElephants and baobabs around Tarangire

Drive west with your own guide to a lodge on the wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Game drives in Tarangire National Park, a walk with a guide for older children, and afternoons by the pool.

    Overnight: Chem Chem Lodge

  3. Days 5 to 6 · Ngorongoro CraterThe Ngorongoro highlands

Climb into the highlands to a camp on the rim of Olmoti Crater. One full day goes down into Ngorongoro Crater itself, with a picnic by the hippo pool, and the evenings are cool enough for a fire.

    Overnight: The Highlands

  4. Days 7 to 9 · Serengeti National ParkA mobile camp in the Serengeti

A light aircraft to the Serengeti, where the camp moves through the year to stay close to the herds. The guides are used to young guests and spend as long on dung beetles and kopjes as on lions.

    Overnight: Serengeti Safari Camp

  5. Days 10 to 13 · Kiwengwa, ZanzibarFour nights by the sea on Zanzibar

Fly to Zanzibar for a family beach hotel on the east coast. Swim at high tide, look for starfish in the lagoon at low tide, and take one morning to see the giant tortoises on Changuu Island off Stone Town.

Overnight: A family beach hotel on the Kiwengwa coast

  6. Day 14 · Zanzibar airportFly home

Transfer to Zanzibar airport for the flight home to London Heathrow with one connection on the way.

Lodge · Burunge Wildlife Management Area, between Tarangire and Lake Manyara, Tanzania

    • Private guide

Camp · Olmoti Crater, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

    The Highlands

    • Crater hikes
    • Wood-burning stoves

Ways to make it yours

  • A private vehicle in the Serengeti

Keep a vehicle and guide to yourselves in the Serengeti, so drives fit around naps, snacks and short attention spans.

  • An extra night in the Serengeti

A fourth Serengeti night gives more room for a long day out with a picnic, which is often where the best sightings happen.
