Why Turks and Caicos suits a simple beach week

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory of low limestone islands south-east of the Bahamas. Almost everyone stays on Providenciales, where Grace Bay Beach runs for miles along a lagoon protected by a barrier reef. The water is calm, clear and shallow for a long way out.

It is the island group we suggest for families and couples who want a simple beach holiday: good hotels on one long beach, easy snorkelling and little driving. Days out are by boat, to the uninhabited cays, Middle Caicos caves or, in winter, to see humpback whales off Salt Cay and Grand Turk.

The caveats are cost and culture. Everything is imported, taxes and service charges add over a fifth to hotel bills, and Providenciales feels more resort than village. There is also only a twice-weekly flight from London.

Things worth doing in Turks and Caicos

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • Turquoise water lapping a long white beach backed by palms in the Turks and Caicos under a bright blue sky

    Grace Bay Beach

Grace Bay is the reason people come: a long curve of fine pale sand on Providenciales, part of the Princess Alexandra National Park. The barrier reef offshore keeps the water calm, so it suits small children and paddleboards alike. Walk it at sunrise, when the sand is empty and the water glassy.

    Best November to June

  • Spotted eagle ray gliding over coral and sand on a reef in the Turks and Caicos

Snorkelling from shore at the Bight Reef

Off the western end of Grace Bay, the Bight Reef, also called Coral Gardens, is one of the few reefs you can swim to from the beach. Turtles, stingrays and reef fish are regular sightings. Smith's Reef near Turtle Cove is a good second site. For the barrier reef itself, take a boat.

    Best March to July

  • Aerial view of Salt Cay in the Turks and Caicos, a small triangular island ringed by turquoise shallows in deep blue ocean

    Humpback whales off Salt Cay

From late December to early April, humpback whales migrate past the Turks Islands, and boats from Grand Turk, Salt Cay and Providenciales go out to find them. Salt Cay is tiny, with salt ponds and donkeys, and makes a good day trip or overnight. In the water, strict rules protect the whales.

    Best January to March

  • Big Sand Cay seen from the air, a slim sandy islet in the Turks and Caicos surrounded by deep blue sea

A boat day to the uninhabited cays

East of Grace Bay, Little Water Cay is home to rock iguanas on boardwalks, and Half Moon Bay is a sandbar between two cays. A private boat can combine them with snorkelling on the barrier reef and a conch lunch. Plan it for a calm day; your captain will know which.

Best March to July and November

  • Dragon Cay and the limestone headlands of Mudjin Harbour, Middle Caicos, beyond a wave-washed beach

Caves and cliffs on Middle Caicos

Take the ferry to North Caicos and drive across the causeway to Middle Caicos, the largest and quietest of the islands. The Conch Bar Caves are a limestone cave system with bats and stalactites, and Mudjin Harbour has limestone cliffs and a small beach below them. It is a full day, and worth it.

    Best November to April

  • Turquoise water of Chalk Sound on Providenciales, dotted with low wooded islets beyond green scrub

    Kayaking Chalk Sound

Chalk Sound is a national park on the western side of Providenciales, a shallow lagoon of vivid turquoise dotted with small rocky islets. Kayaks and paddleboards are the way to explore it, ideally in the calm of late afternoon. It is a short drive from Grace Bay.

    Best November to July

Where to stay in Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay has the widest choice, from Grace Bay Club to smaller boutique hotels and villas, all on the same beach. For seclusion, Amanyara sits on the quiet north-west coast, and COMO Parrot Cay is a private island reached by boat. Sailrock on South Caicos suits those who want to be further away.

We match each trip in Turks and Caicos to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

Getting there

British Airways runs the only transatlantic service, from Heathrow on Thursdays and Sundays, with a one-hour stop in Nassau. The journey takes about 12 hours. Other days mean connecting via the USA.

Entry requirements

UK passport holders do not currently need a visa to visit. Read the FCDO entry requirements (opens in a new tab) before you book, and check US transit rules if you connect through the USA.

Health

Tap water is produced by reverse osmosis and is generally safe to drink. The sun is fierce, so a long-sleeved rash vest helps when snorkelling. Check TravelHealthPro (opens in a new tab) and the FCDO health page.

Money

The currency is the US dollar, and there is no bureau de change at the airport, so bring dollars with you. ATMs are few and not always working. Hotels add a 12% tourism tax and a 10% service charge, and some add a facility fee.

Phones and internet

Any modern phone will work, but you may need to enable roaming if you do not buy a local SIM, and eSIM support is limited. Hotel wifi is standard.

Tipping

Tips of around 15% are expected for most services. The 10% service charge on hotel bills is shared among staff, so add about 5% for someone who looked after you well.

Turks and Caicos questions

How risky is hurricane season in Turks and Caicos?

The season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the end of August and September are the most likely times for a hurricane to hit or threaten the islands. June, July and November are statistically quieter and good value. If you travel between late August and October, book flexible rates and insurance that covers weather disruption.

Why is Turks and Caicos so expensive?

Almost everything is imported, and hotel bills carry a 12% tourism tax plus a 10% service charge, with some hotels adding a facility fee. That adds 22% to 27% before tips. Villas and self-catering can bring costs down, but restaurant prices stay high.

Is Turks and Caicos good for young children?

It is an easy choice for them. The water at Grace Bay is calm and shallow, many hotels have family suites and kids' clubs, and transfers are short. The main drawback is the lack of a daily direct flight from London.

Should we visit more than one island?

Most people stay on Providenciales, which has the beaches and hotels. A day trip to Middle Caicos or, in whale season, to Salt Cay or Grand Turk adds variety. For real seclusion, spend a few nights on Parrot Cay or South Caicos.
