Why Barbados is the Caribbean island we suggest first

Barbados is a coral island of about 34 kilometres by 23, with a flight time from London that makes a week feel generous. The west coast has calm, clear water and the classic hotels. The south coast is livelier and better value. The Atlantic east coast is wild, green and almost empty.

It suits couples, families and anyone who cares about dinner. We usually plan a week on the west coast, with days out to the east coast, a rum estate and the Friday fish fry at Oistins.

The honest caveat is that Barbados is well known and well visited. Christmas and Easter on the west coast are busy and expensive, and some beaches narrow at high tide. Choose your hotel for its stretch of sand, not just its name.

Things worth doing in Barbados

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • Turquoise water and a curve of pale sand along Carlisle Bay on the south-west coast of Barbados

Turtles and wrecks in Carlisle Bay

Carlisle Bay, just south of Bridgetown, is a shallow marine park with several shipwrecks in snorkelling depth. Green and hawksbill turtles feed along the west coast, and catamaran and small-boat trips stop to swim with them. Go in the morning, when the sea is flattest and the boats fewer.

    Best December to May

  • A jetty reaching out into calm water at the fishing port of Oistins, Barbados, at dawn

    Friday night at Oistins

Oistins is a fishing town on the south coast, and on Friday nights its fish market turns into an open-air party. Stalls grill marlin, mahi-mahi and flying fish with macaroni pie, and a sound system plays for dancing. Arrive early to eat, stay late to watch.

    Good all year

  • Palm trees and red-roofed estate buildings on the grounds of St Nicholas Abbey in St Peter, Barbados

    Rum at St Nicholas Abbey

St Nicholas Abbey in the north of the island is a plantation house from 1658 with its own working distillery and a heritage steam railway. The tour and tasting are a good introduction to Barbados rum, and the view from Cherry Tree Hill nearby looks over the whole east coast. Combine it with lunch in Speightstown.

    Best November to May

  • Coral boulders standing in the Atlantic surf below green hills at Bathsheba on the east coast of Barbados

    Bathsheba and the east coast

The east coast is where Barbados looks least like the postcards. At Bathsheba, huge coral boulders sit in the surf and the Soup Bowl reef break draws surfers. Swimming is dangerous here, so come for the walk, the light and a long lunch looking at the Atlantic.

    Best November to April

  • Pale stalactites and flowstone hanging from the ceiling inside Harrison's Cave, Barbados

    Harrison's Cave

In the limestone centre of the island, an electric tram runs through Harrison's Cave past stalactites, streams and pools. It is an easy hour and a good choice for families or a rainy afternoon. Pair it with Welchman Hall Gully, a deep, forested ravine next door.

    Best June to October

  • Boats moored along the calm Careenage in Historic Bridgetown, Barbados, beneath a bright cloud-streaked sky

    Historic Bridgetown and the Garrison

Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a colonial town of narrow lanes and a military district around the Garrison Savannah, where racing still takes place. A morning with a local guide covers the parliament buildings, the synagogue and the harbour at the Careenage.

    Best November to April

Where to stay in Barbados

The west coast, from Paynes Bay to Speightstown, has the calmest sea and hotels such as Sandy Lane and the Coral Reef Club, and many private villas. The south coast suits families on a budget and people who want bars within walking distance. For something quieter, a night or two on the east coast shows another island.

We match each trip in Barbados to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

Barbados has a dry season during the northern winter and spring and a wetter, warmer season through summer and autumn, with daytime highs around 30°C all year. December to April is the classic time to go, when the trade winds keep things fresh.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and most activity falls between mid-August and mid-October. Even a storm that passes at a distance can bring rain and rough seas, so we pair autumn trips with flexible bookings and good insurance. May, June and November are the sweet spots for value.

Money

The Barbados dollar is pegged to the US dollar, and US dollars are accepted island-wide. Most shops and restaurants take major cards. Keep some small notes for rum shops and beach vendors.

Phones and internet

Check your UK provider's roaming charges before you fly, as calls and data can be costly. Hotel wifi is widespread, and local SIMs are available from the island's mobile networks.

Check restaurant bills for a service charge first. Where none is added, around 10% is appreciated for good service.

Barbados questions

Is it safe to visit Barbados in hurricane season?

Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Most weeks pass without trouble, but a storm in the region can bring days of rain and rough seas, and a direct hit can close the airport. If you travel then, choose flexible rates, take insurance that covers weather disruption and follow local advice. June and November are statistically quieter.

West coast or south coast?

The west coast has the calmest water, the classic hotels and villas, and a quieter evening scene. The south coast is breezier, livelier and better value, with Oistins and plenty of bars nearby. Families with young children often prefer the west; couples who like to walk out to dinner may prefer the south.

Is Barbados good for families?

Very. The flight is direct, the water on the west coast is calm, the tap water is safe and English is spoken everywhere. Many hotels have kids' clubs, and days out such as Harrison's Cave and turtle trips work well for children.

Do we need to hire a car?

Not necessarily. Driving is on the left, but roads are narrow and signage is patchy. Taxis and private drivers are easy to arrange, and we often book a driver for the east coast and rum estate days so everyone can enjoy the tastings.
