Why St Lucia is the island we choose for scenery

St Lucia is volcanic, steep and green. In the southwest, the twin Pitons rise straight out of the sea beside Soufrière, a UNESCO-listed landscape of reef, rainforest and a steaming volcanic crater. Hotels here are built into the hillsides, with open walls facing the peaks.

It is the island we suggest for honeymoons and for couples who want to walk, dive and eat well as much as lie on a beach. We often split a stay between Soufrière for the scenery and the north around Rodney Bay for easier beaches and restaurants.

The honest caveats are roads and beaches. The drive from Hewanorra airport to the north takes well over an hour on winding roads, and the beaches are good rather than great. If sand is the priority, Antigua may suit you better.

Things worth doing in St Lucia

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • Petit Piton's forested spire seen from the Gros Piton trail, with the coastline and sea stretching north, St Lucia

    Climbing Gros Piton

Gros Piton is the taller and more walkable of the two peaks. A local guide leads you up a steep, rocky forest trail to the summit in two to three hours, with views over Petit Piton and down the coast to Vieux Fort. Start at dawn to avoid the heat. For a gentler alternative, the Tet Paul Nature Trail has Piton views in under an hour.

    Best December to May

  • Pale grey volcanic ground and rising steam at Sulphur Springs near Soufrière, St Lucia, edged by green forest

Sulphur Springs and the mud baths

Near Soufrière, a collapsed volcanic crater still steams and bubbles. After a short guided walk to the viewpoint, you can bathe in warm mineral pools and cover yourself in grey volcanic mud. It is touristy and smells of sulphur, but it is fun. Go early, before the cruise groups arrive.

    Good all year

  • Dark volcanic sand, palms and clear water beneath a forested headland at Anse Chastanet, St Lucia

Snorkelling the reef at Anse Chastanet

Anse Chastanet, just north of Soufrière, sits within a protected marine area, and the reef begins a few strokes from the beach. Parrotfish, trumpetfish and turtles are regular sightings, and the drop-off beyond is good for diving. The neighbouring cove of Anse Mamin has shady forest trails for mountain biking.

    Best December to June

  • Diamond Falls pouring over mineral-streaked rock into a pool amid rainforest in the Diamond Botanical Gardens, Soufrière, St Lucia

Diamond Falls and the botanical gardens

The Diamond Botanical Gardens near Soufrière are a colonial estate of tropical flowers, with a waterfall coloured by the minerals in its spring. Old mineral baths on the estate can still be used. Allow an hour, and pair it with lunch in town or a stop at one of the nearby cocoa estates.

    Good all year

  • The green hills of Pigeon Island seen from Fort Rodney, with Rodney Bay and St Lucia's north coast beyond

    Pigeon Island in the north

Pigeon Island, now joined to the mainland by a causeway, is a national landmark with the ruins of a British fort and two short hilltop climbs. The view from Fort Rodney stretches across Rodney Bay to Martinique on clear days. The sheltered beach below is good for a swim afterwards.

    Best December to May

  • Sunset over Rodney Bay near Gros Islet, St Lucia, with yachts at anchor silhouetted on the calm water

    Friday night in Gros Islet

Every Friday the fishing village of Gros Islet closes its streets for a jump-up: grilled fish and chicken, rum punch and music until late. It is lively, local and friendly. Go with a driver from your hotel, eat early from the stalls and leave when you have had enough.

    Good all year

Where to stay in St Lucia

Around Soufrière, hotels such as Jade Mountain, Anse Chastanet and Ladera face the Pitons, often with one wall open to the view. In the north, near Rodney Bay, hotels like Cap Maison are closer to beaches, restaurants and the airport for island hops. Marigot Bay in between is a sheltered harbour for sailors.

We match each trip in St Lucia to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

St Lucia is warm all year, typically 24°C to 31°C. December to April is the driest and busiest season, good for hiking the Pitons and exploring Soufrière. May and June are quieter and better value, and the Jazz and Arts Festival in May is a good reason to go.

The rainy season runs from June to December, with more rain in the rainforest than on the coast, and it overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season from 1 June to 30 November. The tourism authority offers a Holiday Guarantee that lets you cancel or rebook before arrival if a hurricane strikes; check its current terms when you book.

St Lucia questions

When is hurricane season in St Lucia?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most storms between mid-August and mid-October. It overlaps St Lucia's rainy season. Many weeks pass without incident, but travel then with flexible bookings and good insurance. December to April is the safest and driest window.

Should we stay near the Pitons or in the north?

For a first visit, both. Soufrière has the scenery, the hikes and the hotels people remember, but fewer good beaches and a slower pace. The north has easier beaches, more restaurants and a shorter drive to the smaller airport. Five nights south and four north works well.

Is St Lucia good for a honeymoon?

Very much so. Hotels near Soufrière are designed for couples, with private plunge pools, open-sided rooms facing the Pitons and dinners on the terrace. Add a sunset catamaran, a mud bath and a dawn climb, and you have a very complete week.

Is St Lucia suitable for young children?

Yes, with the right hotel. Some Soufrière hotels are adults-only or have steep paths, so families usually do better in the north near Rodney Bay, with calmer beaches and more choice. Day trips to the Pitons still work well.
