Why Jamaica is for people who want more than a sunlounger

Jamaica is big enough to travel through. The north coast has the classic hotels and reef-sheltered beaches, the Blue Mountains rise above Kingston to over 2,000 metres, and the south coast around Treasure Beach feels like another island altogether.

We plan Jamaica as a journey: a few nights near Montego Bay, then the slow south coast, a night or two in the mountains for coffee and cool air, and Port Antonio in the lush east. Food, music and the people you meet are the point, and a good driver-guide makes it work.

The honest caveat is safety and roads. Crime is high in parts of Kingston and Montego Bay, though tourist areas are not usually affected, and the drives are slow. We use private drivers and keep journeys to three hours or less.

Things worth doing in Jamaica

The experiences we plan most often, with the months they are at their best.

  • Mist hanging over forested slopes and the coffee-growing village of Section in the Blue Mountains, Portland Parish, Jamaica

Coffee and cloud forest in the Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains rise within an hour of Kingston, and their slopes grow the coffee that carries the Blue Mountain name. Visit a small estate to see beans picked, dried and roasted, walk trails through cool cloud forest, and, if you are keen, climb Blue Mountain Peak before dawn for the sunrise. Bring a fleece: it is cold up here.

    Best December to April

  • Bamboo rafts on the sunlit Rio Grande between forested hills in Portland Parish, Jamaica

    Rafting the Rio Grande

Near Port Antonio, raft captains pole long bamboo rafts down the Rio Grande through green gorges, a trip that takes a couple of relaxed hours. Stop for a swim and a lunch of crayfish cooked on the bank. It is a gentle, old-fashioned outing that suits all ages.

Best July and December to April

  • Palms leaning over the pale sand and clear water of Frenchman's Cove near Port Antonio, Jamaica

    The coves of Port Antonio

Port Antonio is the quiet, rainy, green end of Jamaica. The Blue Lagoon, where cold springwater meets the sea, and the white sand of Frenchman's Cove are both short drives from town. Winnifred Beach is where local families swim at weekends. Stay two or three nights; it rewards slowing down.

Best January to April and July

  • A river safari boat travelling along the reed-lined Black River in St Elizabeth, Jamaica

    Treasure Beach and YS Falls

Treasure Beach on the dry south coast is a string of fishing villages with no big resorts. Days here mean boat trips to the Pelican Bar, a shack on a sandbar, and long dinners of fresh fish. Inland, YS Falls drops through tiers of pools you can swim in. It is the island at its slowest.

    Best November to April

  • Negril Lighthouse standing above the low limestone cliffs of Negril's West End, with clear Caribbean water and the open sea beyond, Jamaica

    Sunset on the Negril cliffs

At the western tip of the island, Negril's Seven Mile Beach gives way to low limestone cliffs over deep, clear water. Rick's Café is the well-known spot for cliff jumping at sunset, but quieter cliff-top hotels have ladders straight into the sea. It is an easy day trip or two nights from Montego Bay.

    Best December to May

  • A brightly painted yellow and red building on a street corner in downtown Kingston, Jamaica

Kingston and the Bob Marley Museum

Kingston is the island's capital and the heart of its music. The Bob Marley Museum is set in his former home at 56 Hope Road, and the National Gallery holds a strong collection of Jamaican art. Go with a guide, then head up into the mountains for the night.

    Good all year

Where to stay in Jamaica

Near Montego Bay, Round Hill and Half Moon have the classic north coast style. GoldenEye, Ian Fleming's former home, sits in Oracabessa. For character, we use Strawberry Hill in the Blue Mountains, Geejam in Port Antonio and Jakes at Treasure Beach. Moving between two or three suits most people.

We match each trip in Jamaica to hotels, lodges and villas chosen for the way you travel. Tell us what matters and a specialist will suggest two or three that fit.

Jamaica is warm all year, with temperatures from about 19°C at night to 32°C by day. December to April is the dry season and the easiest time to tour. There are two rainy seasons, from May to June and from September to November.

Hurricanes can pass over the island between June and November, and the Atlantic season peaks in September. In practice that means planning autumn trips with flexible bookings and travel insurance, and watching the forecast. July and the first half of August are often fine, and the east around Port Antonio is always the wettest part of the island.

Jamaica questions

Is Jamaica safe for tourists?

Crime and homicide rates are high, but gang violence is mostly in inner-city areas and tourist areas are not usually affected. Read the FCDO advice, which names areas where extra caution is needed. We use trusted private drivers and hotels in quiet areas, and suggest you do not wander unfamiliar areas at night.

Should we avoid Jamaica in hurricane season?

Not necessarily, but be honest with yourselves about risk. Hurricane season runs from June to November, and September is the peak. A direct hit is unusual in any given week, but storms bring heavy rain and disruption. For autumn travel, book flexible rates and good insurance. For certainty, choose December to April.

Is an all-inclusive the best way to do Jamaica?

It suits some families, but you miss the food and the island. We prefer smaller hotels that serve Jamaican cooking, plus a driver-guide for days out. If you want an all-inclusive, spend the second half of the trip somewhere with character.

How long do the drives take?

Longer than the map suggests. Montego Bay to Treasure Beach is about two hours, and Kingston to Port Antonio about two and a half, on winding roads. We keep each transfer under three hours.
